Buy thermal boxes: insulation and storage savings in one

A thermal box consists of two parts: a sturdy cardboard outer box and a loose insulation bag as inner lining. The lining is made of bubble film with a laminated layer of metallised PET coating. Thanks to the trapped air and the reflective coating, products hold their temperature for up to 48 hours. You use the thermal box for frozen (-20 °C), chilled (2 to 8 °C) and controlled transport (8 to 25 °C) of meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, meals and pharma.

The big advantage: foldable and pallet efficient

Unlike an EPS box, the outer box and the insulation bag are delivered flat (unfolded). That means up to five times as many thermal boxes fit on a pallet. If you ship a lot or have little storage space, that saves a great deal in transport and warehouse costs. The thermal box is also easy for the end user to separate: the box goes with the waste paper, the insulation bag with the plastic waste.

4-layer or 6-layer: which do you choose?

4-layer thermal box

The efficient standard solution for shorter transports of up to about 24 hours and regular chilled transport. Suitable for fresh e-commerce, meal boxes and short food shipments, and the most economical choice.

6-layer thermal box

Two extra insulation layers for longer transports (24 to 48 hours) and strictly controlled cold chains. The choice for pharma, vaccines and international air freight, slightly more expensive, but with noticeably better insulation. For a strict temperature range (such as vaccines at 2 to 8 °C), combine the 6-layer box with PCM packs instead of standard gel packs.

How do you use a thermal box?

Set up the outer box, place the insulation bag inside and put your product in the bag. Add gel packs or cooling elements on top of the product, because cold air sinks and so cools evenly. Fill the bag as tightly as possible and close it well: the less empty space, the more stable the temperature. The number of cooling elements depends on the shipping time, the contents and the outside temperature.

Applications

  • Food and meal boxes. Fresh meals, meat, fish and dairy for next-day delivery; the compact storage saves space and costs.
  • Pharma and medical. Medicines, vaccines and lab samples; the 6-layer version offers extra certainty for strictly temperature-sensitive shipments.
  • Fruit, vegetables and flowers. Fresh vegetables, fruit and flowers benefit from the stable temperature and protection against humidity changes.

Thermal box or EPS box?

Both insulate well. Choose the thermal box when storage and transport efficiency and easy waste separation matter. For heavy, wet or extra fragile transport where sturdiness comes first, also look at our EPS boxes. Not sure? Ask for a sample or a quote. Foldable Thermal Boxes for Shipping

A foldable thermal box for shipping is an insulated shipping box made up of an outer cardboard carton with a separate insulated bag inside. It keeps chilled and frozen shipments at temperature for 48 to 72 hours and is delivered flat.

Why an insulated cardboard box with a thermal bag

The outer cardboard carton gives strength and a neat, professional look for shipping, while the insulated bag does the insulating work. You do not need an extra outer carton, as you would with a loose insulated bag, and you get more insulation than with cardboard alone.

Four or six layers

The 4-layer bag is enough for chilled transport of up to about 48 hours. For frozen goods or longer journeys, choose the 6-layer bag. The outer box stays the same in both cases.

Storage space

Because the boxes are delivered folded, up to five times as many fit on a pallet as with EPS boxes. For businesses with limited warehouse space, this is often the deciding factor.

Add a coolant

The box insulates, it does not cool. Allow one 400 g gel pack per 5 litres of volume for 24 hours, and double that for frozen goods or 48 hours.

Pharma

For shipments with defined temperature windows, validation reports are available on request.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a thermal box?
A thermal box is a cardboard outer box with a separate insulated liner as an inner lining. The liner consists of bubble wrap with a laminated layer of metallized PET coating, which, together with the still air, keeps products at temperature for up to 48 hours. Suitable for frozen, chilled and controlled transport.
4-layer or 6-layer: which one do I need?
4-layer for shorter shipments of up to approximately 24 hours and standard chilled transport, the most cost-effective choice for e-commerce and meal boxes. 6-layer for longer shipments (24 to 48 hours), pharma, vaccines and international air freight. The 6-layer version has two additional insulation layers and therefore better insulation performance.
Why choose a foldable thermal box instead of an EPS box?
The biggest advantage is storage and transport: because the box and insulated bag are delivered flat, up to 5x as many fit on a pallet compared with EPS. Waste separation is also simple: box with the paper, insulated bag with the plastic. For maximum strength or protection, an EPS box is sometimes still the better choice.
How long does an insulated box stay at temperature?
Combined with sufficient gel packs, an insulated box keeps products at the right temperature for up to 48 hours. The actual duration depends on the number of layers (4 or 6), the number of gel packs, the outside temperature, and how tightly you pack. Packing the box more fully with less empty space improves performance.
Can I use an insulated box for frozen goods?
Yes. The thermal box is suitable for frozen transport (-20 °C), refrigerated transport (2-8 °C), and controlled ambient temperature (8-25 °C). For deep-freeze use, use sufficient gel packs or dry ice; for a strict temperature range, combine the 6-layer version with PCM packs.
Can I reuse a foldable thermal box?
The insulated bag can be used several times as long as it is undamaged. You replace the cardboard outer box when it gets damaged. For shipments without return, both are usually used once.
Can I also transport hot meals in it?
Yes. The same insulation that holds the cold also slows the cooling of hot meals. The product must go into the box at the right temperature, though; the box does not heat.
How much warehouse space do I save?
Because foldable thermal boxes are delivered folded, up to five times as many fit on a pallet as with EPS boxes. For companies with limited storage, that is often the deciding argument.
How much coolant do I need?
Rule of thumb: one 400 g cooling pack per 5 litres of volume for 24 hours of chilled transport. Double that for 48 hours or frozen goods. Place the packs on top of the product, because cold sinks.
Are validation reports available for pharma?
Yes, validation reports are available on request for most pharma applications. Contact us with your specification and the required temperature window.
