Container desiccant bags: preventing condensation

Container desiccant bags absorb moisture in sea containers in transit, which prevents condensation. Important for shipments that spend a long time in a container, where temperature swings can lead to cargo sweat and condensation damage to the cargo.

How do they work?

The bag contains a strongly moisture-absorbing material (CaCl2) that actively draws moisture from the container air and turns it into gel. Once saturated, the bag is spent and goes into the waste stream.

Uses

Sea freight and transcontinental container shipments, especially for electronics, metal parts, leather, bagged food and any goods vulnerable to moisture or mould.

Guides & advice: Container desiccant bags

Frequently asked questions

How many desiccant bags per container?
Depending on the type of cargo, humidity during loading and transit time. For a 20 ft container, typically 4 to 8 bags; for a 40 ft container, 8 to 16 bags. We advise based on your shipment.
How long do they work?
Standard active absorption capacity of 60 to 90 days. This is more than sufficient for transcontinental shipments.
How do I prevent condensation in a shipping container?
Condensation forms because the air inside the container cools as it crosses climate zones. Container desiccant draws the moisture out of the cargo space before it can condense, while a container liner dampens the temperature swings that cause it. Combining both is the standard approach on long sea freight routes.
How do I keep a shipping container dry?
Load as dry as possible, use dry dunnage and hang container desiccant in the cargo space. The calcium chloride in the bags actively pulls moisture out of the air and turns it into a gel, keeping relative humidity low throughout the voyage.
Recyclable?
After use, dispose of with residual waste. Not biodegradable due to the CaCl2.
