Thermal pallet covers

Insulated pallet covers, also known as thermal pallet covers, insulated pallet blankets or air cargo covers, and in air freight terminology as thermal cover, air cargo cover, ULD cover, cargo blanket and reflective pallet cover, protect temperature-sensitive cargo in air freight. What each term means exactly is explained at air cargo covers. Around 95% of our covers go onto ULD and pallet shipments. Typical cargo is perishables: vegetables and fruit, flowers and plants, fish and shellfish, meat and pharmaceutical shipments, cargo that would otherwise see temperature peaks between cold store, platform and cargo hold. The reflective outer layer keeps out radiant heat, the insulating inner layer keeps the cold in the cargo. Note: this is not a plastic pallet cover against rain or dust, but an insulating cover against temperature. Reusable instead of single-use shrink film. Available in standard sizes for euro pallets, block pallets and roll containers. Covers for the common ULD format PMC are available too. Covers for PAG, AKE and LD3 are available on request with a quote, as are custom sizes for deviating builds. From our own production since 1972, standard sizes available directly from stock. Is your cargo going by sea freight? Then you can insulate the complete sea container with our container liners.

Buy thermal covers: air cargo covers and thermal pallet covers from our own production

Thermal covers, also known as thermal pallet covers, pallet covers or insulated covers, and in air freight terms as thermal covers, air cargo covers, ULD covers, cargo blankets, thermal pallet covers, insulated pallet covers and reflective pallet covers, are flexible insulating covers that protect temperature-sensitive cargo during transport and handling.

About 95% of our thermal covers go by air freight. They are used on ULD and pallet shipments on routes of KLM, Lufthansa and Emirates, among others. Cooled Solutions makes the covers entirely in its own production, and has done so since 1972. That makes short lead times, custom sizes and consistent quality possible.

Thermal covers in air freight

ULDs, pallets and roll containers

We supply thermal covers (ULD thermal covers) for the common ULD formats PMC, PAG, AKE and LD3, for EURO pallets (120x80 cm) and US pallets (120x100 cm), and for roll containers. During loading and unloading on the apron, cargo often stands unprotected in the sun or the cold, and that is where the temperature peaks arise that take a shipment out of specification.

Perishables: fruit and vegetables, flowers, fish and meat

Fresh products make up most of temperature-sensitive air freight. Vegetables and fruit, cut flowers and plants, fish and shellfish, and meat all lose quality with every temperature change between cold store, apron and cargo hold. A thermal cargo cover slows those changes considerably.

Pharmaceutical air freight

For medicines, vaccines and laboratory samples, temperature control is not optional. Thermal covers are used here as passive protection, often together with cooling elements, to keep the cold chain intact on routes where no active cooling is available.

How does a thermal cover work?

A thermal cover works as a passive insulation layer around a pallet or ULD. The cover does not cool actively, but slows temperature change. The reflective outer layer keeps out radiant heat, and the insulating inner layer keeps the cold in the cargo.

What decides how well it works?

  • Starting temperature of the cargo
  • Duration of transport and handling
  • Outside temperature and sun on the apron
  • Use of gel packs or cooling elements in the cargo
  • How tightly the cover fits around the pallet or ULD

Good to know

  • Thermal covers work passively and do not cool actively
  • They slow temperature change, but do not stop it completely
  • They also protect against rain, humidity and condensation
  • Reusable, unlike single-use shrink film

Standard sizes and custom sizes

Most thermal pallet covers are bought in standard sizes for EURO and block pallets and for the ULD formats PMC, PAG, AKE and LD3. These are ready to use straight away. For a different build-up, taller loads or roll containers, we make covers to measure. Because we produce in-house, custom work is routine rather than the exception.

Beyond air freight

A smaller share of our covers goes to road transport and city distribution, where no refrigerated vehicle is available or where frequent door openings let the temperature in a refrigerated truck rise. Thermal covers also help with temporary outdoor storage or when active cooling fails.

Advantages of thermal covers

Temperature control without energy: the cover uses no power or fuel and works anywhere, on the apron and in the cargo hold too.

Protection against moisture and condensation: the cover forms a barrier against rain and high humidity and limits condensation on the cargo.

Reusable and tear resistant: made of sturdy materials and designed for long use, which lowers the cost per shipment.

Quick to fit: light in weight and slid over a pallet load or ULD in a few minutes.

Own production since 1972: short lead times, custom sizes and consistent quality from our own factory.

Matching products

Combine your thermal cover with an insulated base sheet for a fully closed insulation cocoon around the pallet. Also shipping loose boxes? Then look at our cooler boxes or line them yourself with insulation foil on a roll.

Thermal Pallet Covers

Thermal pallet covers protect temperature-sensitive cargo during air freight. The cover fits over the built-up pallet and keeps the cold in between the cold store, the apron and the cargo hold.

Standard sizes

We supply insulated pallet covers for Euro pallets (120 x 80 cm) and block pallets (120 x 100 cm), in various heights up to 150 cm. We also have standard sizes for roll containers and drums. If your load build is different, we produce to size.

Why over the pallet and not just around it

A cover that fits over the whole load closes off the top. That is exactly where most radiant heat gets in while a pallet waits on the apron. Wrapping only the sides leaves the top open.

With an insulated base

For longer journeys, combine the cover with an insulated base plate. The pallet is then fully enclosed, including underneath, where heat rises from the tarmac or the floor.

Insulated Covers

An insulated cover is a flexible, reflective cover that protects temperature-sensitive cargo from external heat. In air freight it is the standard solution for perishables on pallets and ULDs.

How it works

The outer surface is reflective and bounces radiant heat back. The inner layer insulates and keeps the cold with the cargo. Together they limit the temperature rise during the hours a shipment stands outside the chilled environment: on the apron, during loading and in the cargo hold.

What it is for

Fruit and vegetables, flowers and plants, fish and seafood, meat and pharma shipments. In short, everything that counts as perishables in air freight.

Reusable

An insulated cover lasts for many journeys. In the long run that makes it cheaper than disposable film, and it reduces waste for the receiver.

Made to measure

Besides standard sizes for Euro pallets, block pallets and roll containers, we produce to size for unusual load heights or specific ULD shapes.

Reusable Thermal Covers

A reusable thermal cover replaces disposable shrink wrap in temperature-sensitive transport. You use it again, journey after journey. Please note: this is not a plastic pallet cover against rain or dust, but an insulating cover against temperature.

How it differs from shrink wrap

Shrink wrap holds a pallet together, but it does not insulate and does not reflect heat. For cargo that has to stay at temperature, film therefore adds nothing. A thermal cover does both: it covers the load and keeps the cold in.

Weighing up the cost

For one-off use, film looks cheaper. Once you use the same cover dozens of times, the sums reverse. Base your calculation on the number of journeys per year and the cost per pallet, not on the purchase price alone.

When disposable still makes sense

If the shipment goes to a receiver who does not return the cover, the advantage disappears. If you run fixed routes or the packaging comes back, reusable is almost always the cheapest choice.

Air Cargo Covers, Thermal Covers and ULD Covers

In air freight, a thermal pallet cover goes by many names. In the cargo department, in the booking and on the apron, people say: thermal cover, air cargo cover, ULD cover, thermal pallet cover, insulated pallet cover, reflective pallet cover or cargo blanket. All these terms refer to the same product: an insulating, reflective cover that protects temperature-sensitive cargo between the cold store, the tarmac and the cargo hold.

One product, seven names

TermUsed by
Thermal cover / thermal pallet coverCarriers and ground handlers, in packing instructions
Air cargo coverFreight forwarders and booking platforms
ULD coverHandling of unit load devices: PMC, PAG, AKE, LD3
Insulated / reflective pallet coverTechnical specifications and tenders
Cargo blanketAmerican usage, loose blankets over the load

Note two terms that do not belong here: a plain pallet cover is usually a plastic cover against rain and dust, and a thermal blanket with no qualifier is an emergency blanket. Neither insulates cargo.

What the cover is for

During handling, an air cargo pallet sometimes stands outdoors for hours, on hot asphalt in summer and below freezing in winter. The reflective outer layer keeps out radiant heat, and the insulating inner layer keeps the cold in the cargo. Around 95% of our covers go on ULD and pallet shipments via KLM, Lufthansa and Emirates routes, with perishables and pharma as typical cargo.

Sizes for pallets and ULDs

Available in standard sizes for Euro pallets (120 x 80 cm), block pallets (120 x 100 cm), roll containers and the common ULD formats PMC, PAG, AKE and LD3. We make unusual load builds to size, from our own production since 1972.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a thermal pallet cover and a plain pallet cover?
They are not the same product. A plain pallet cover is a plastic hood that protects the pallet against rain, dust and dirt. A thermal pallet cover is an insulating cover that keeps the cargo at temperature: the reflective outer layer blocks radiant heat and the insulating inner layer keeps the cold in. If you need weather protection, you need a plastic hood. If it is about temperature, you are in the right place. We supply thermal covers in standard sizes for Euro pallets (120x80 cm), block pallets (120x100 cm) and the ULD formats PMC, PAG, AKE and LD3, plus made-to-measure from our own production.
Are thermal pallet covers suitable for air freight?
Yes, thermal pallet covers are widely used in air cargo to protect temperature-sensitive goods during transport. They are applied to pallets and ULDs such as LD3 containers and PMC units.
What is the difference between a thermal cover and an insulated pallet cover?
Both terms refer to the same product. "Insulated pallet cover" stresses the insulating inner layer, "thermal pallet cover" the temperature protection as a whole; in air freight you will also hear thermal cover or air cargo cover. You can find all versions and sizes at /collections/thermohoezen.
What is the difference between a thermal pallet cover and active cooling?
A thermal pallet cover is a passive solution and works without electricity or a refrigeration unit. Active cooling uses, for example, refrigerated containers or reefers. Thermal pallet covers are often used as additional protection or when active cooling is not available.
Are thermal pallet covers suitable for chilled shipping food?
Yes, thermal pallet covers are used for chilled shipping of products such as meat, fish, and AGF. They help limit temperature fluctuations during transport.
Can thermal pallet covers be combined with gel packs?
Yes, thermal pallet covers are often combined with gel packs or other coolants to better control the temperature during transport.
Which products are thermal pallet covers suitable for?
Above all for perishables in air freight: fruit and vegetables, flowers and plants, fish and shellfish, meat. Also for pharma shipments such as medicines, vaccines and laboratory samples, where the cold chain has to stay unbroken between cold store, apron and cargo hold.
When do you use a thermal pallet cover?
Thermal covers are used when products need to be protected from temperature fluctuations during transport, for example in air freight, storage, or when active cooling is not available.
How do you fit a thermal cover over a pallet or ULD?
The cover is pulled over the finished build-up from the top, like a bell, and closed at the foot of the pallet. Two people manage it in a few minutes, without tools. What matters is that the cover fits as snugly as possible: the less air circulates, the slower the cargo warms up.
Why a thermal pallet cover and not shrink film?
Shrink film holds a pallet together but does not insulate or reflect heat. For cargo that must stay at temperature, film adds nothing. A thermal pallet cover covers the load and retains the cold, and it is reusable.
How long does a thermal pallet cover keep cargo at temperature?
A thermal pallet cover does not cool, it slows warming. How long that lasts depends on the starting temperature of the cargo, the outside temperature and whether the pallet stands in sun or shade. In air freight it is usually about the hours between cold store and cargo hold, and those hours are exactly the critical ones.
Is a thermal pallet cover reusable?
Yes, a thermal pallet cover lasts many trips. If the packaging comes back to you, reusable is almost always cheaper than disposable film. If the recipient does not return the cover, that advantage disappears.
Which sizes are available for pallets?
We supply standard sizes for Euro pallets and block pallets in various heights, plus versions for roll containers. If your build-up differs, we make to measure. An overview is at /collections/thermohoezen.
Which ULD formats does a thermal cover fit?
We supply covers for the common ULD formats PMC, PAG, AKE and LD3, as well as for Euro pallets (120 x 80 cm), block pallets (120 x 100 cm) and roll containers. As a ULD cover or cargo blanket they go straight onto the standard build-ups used by KLM, Lufthansa and Emirates.
Do I need cooling elements as well as a thermal pallet cover?
That depends on your route. A thermal pallet cover slows warming from outside but adds no cold itself. For longer routes or warm conditions, combine the cover with coolants in the cargo itself.
