Insulation materials for chilled transport: from a single box to a complete pallet

Insulation material forms the passive barrier that protects your product against heat, cold and temperature swings in transit. It does not cool by itself, but slows heat transfer from outside, so your shipment stays within the right temperature window for longer. Combined with cooling elements, this gives a complete, reliable cold chain, whether you send one box or a whole pallet. As a manufacturer with our own production since 1972, we supply the full range from our own stock.

Which insulation material do you need?

The right choice depends mainly on the size of your shipment and how you pack. Below are the four main uses, each with the matching material.

Pallets and roll containers → thermal covers

If you ship whole pallets or roll containers, choose thermal covers, reusable insulating blankets that enclose the whole pallet or ULD. Widely used in air freight and chilled road transport, in standard sizes for EURO and US pallets and for ULDs such as LD3, LD6 and PMC.

Loose boxes → cooling bags or insulation foil

If you want to insulate loose boxes, use a cooling bag or insulated bag as an inner lining in the box, or wrap the box in insulation foil on a roll, which you cut to size easily. Both are flexible, light and compact to store.

Small, flat shipments → cooling envelopes

If you send small, flat products by post or courier, a cooling envelope is light, affordable and often fits through the letterbox, suited to sushi, cheese, charcuterie or pharma samples.

Under the load → insulated base sheet

The base is often the weakest spot in the insulation. Put an insulated base sheet under the load to hold the cold in from below, and together with a thermal cover you close off the whole pallet as a complete insulation cocoon.

How does insulation material work?

Our insulation materials work on two principles at once. A reflective layer (aluminium or metalized PET) bounces radiant heat back, while a buffer of still air, in bubble film, foam or a honeycomb structure, slows heat transfer. Together they keep the temperature inside your packaging stable for longer.

Important: insulation material does not cool by itself. It extends the effect of your cooling. So always combine it with gel packs or cooling elements, put them on top of the product (cold air sinks) and pack as tightly as you can. The less empty space, the better the result.

What is insulation material used for?

  • Food and fresh e-commerce. Getting meat, fish, dairy and meal boxes to the customer chilled, even with delayed delivery.
  • Pharma and air freight. Medicines, vaccines and biological samples within a strict temperature range, in line with GDP and IATA.
  • Fruit, vegetables and flowers. Protecting vegetables, fruit and cut flowers against temperature peaks and condensation during handling and export.
  • Road transport and last mile. A passive solution when a refrigerated vehicle is not available or too costly.

Why insulation material from Cooled Solutions?

We are one of the European specialists in thermal covers and insulation foils, with more than fifty years of experience. Because we make the products ourselves, you benefit from:

  • Our own production. Short lines, so consistent quality and sharp prices.
  • Custom work. We usually produce different sizes or uses within 2 to 6 weeks.
  • Fast delivery. Standard products are ready to ship from stock; order before 14:00 and it usually ships the same day.
  • Practical advice. We think along on the right combination of material, cooling and outer packaging for your transport profile.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a thermal pallet cover and an insulated liner?
A thermal pallet cover is a large insulating blanket that you place over an entire pallet or ULD; an insulated liner (cool bag) is a flexible bag used inside a cardboard box to insulate individual packages. Rule of thumb: pallets and roll containers → thermal pallet cover, individual boxes → insulated liner or insulation film.
Does insulation material cool my products?
No. Insulation material works passively: it slows down heat transfer and holds the existing temperature for longer, but it does not actively cool. Always combine it with gel packs, cooling elements or (for frozen goods) dry ice. Place the cooling on top of the product, because cold air sinks.
How long does insulation material keep products at the right temperature?
That depends on the material, the number of gel packs, the outside temperature, and how tightly you pack. In practice, insulation foil and cooling bags generally maintain performance for around 24 to 48 hours; a thermal pallet cover slows temperature fluctuations at pallet level during transport and transshipment. Packing more fully with less empty space improves performance.
Which insulation material should I choose for air freight?
For air cargo, use thermal pallet covers for pallets and ULDs (LD3, LD6, PMC), preferably in combination with an insulated base sheet to seal the underside. This protects the cargo against the major temperature fluctuations during tarmac handling.
Is insulation material reusable?
Thermal covers are made from strong, tear-resistant materials and are reusable, making them sustainable and cost-effective. Insulated bags, insulation film, and insulated envelopes are generally intended as single-use shipping packaging, although they can be used multiple times with careful handling.
Do you supply custom insulation material?
Yes. As a manufacturer, we supply custom solutions in non-standard dimensions or designs, for example for special pallets, roll containers or ULDs. Lead time for custom orders is typically 2 to 6 weeks. Contact us for a custom quote.
