Insulated shipping bags

Insulated shipping bags are insulated bags (also called insulated bags, thermal bags, isothermal bags or insulated pouches) that you use to ship meat, fish, meals and pharmaceutical products chilled. Our insulated bags for shipping are available in 2-layer, 4-layer and 6-layer versions, from our own production since 1972 and directly from stock. An insulated shipping bag is a flexible and economical alternative to the EPS box.

Which thermal shipping bag fits your shipment?

The 2-layer thermal bags are made of insulating foam with a reflective outer film. The inside is entirely white and all six sizes have a self-adhesive strip. If you choose 4-layer or 6-layer, you get more insulation for longer transports.

Combining insulated bags with coolant

An insulated bag works best together with coolant. Choose gel ice packs or rigid freezer packs, depending on the temperature you need. For a complete shipping solution, also see our cold chain packaging.

Buy insulated bags and cooling bags: flexible cooling from 12 to 72 hours

An insulated bag or cooling bag is a flexible cold packaging for shipping temperature-sensitive products chilled and frozen. The 2-layer bags are made of insulating foam with a reflective outer film. The whole inside is white and all six sizes have a self-adhesive strip. The 4- and 6-layer versions combine reflective metallised PET film with bubble film; the 6-layer bag has extra insulation layers. Combined with gel packs, this gives a reliable, affordable solution for daily use in food, pharma and e-commerce. Below you will find all three versions (2-layer, 4-layer and 6-layer) with a direct price, plus a selection guide based on our own test data.

You will meet the insulated bag under many names: cooling bag, thermal bag, isothermal bag or cool bag. They all mean the same thing: a light, insulating bag that keeps the cold chain intact together with cooling elements.

In practice you put the products in the insulated bag and then put the bag in a cardboard box. In one step you have a complete cool box, without the storage and transport costs of preformed EPS boxes.

2-layer, 4-layer or 6-layer: which should you choose?

The difference is the number of insulation layers, and so how long the contents stay cold. The figures below come from our own test with a 400 gram gel pack at a constant ambient temperature of 25 °C over 48 hours. Use them as a guide, because actual performance depends on filling, the number of gel packs and the outside temperature.

4-layer insulated bag (metallised PET + bubble film): 24 to 48 hours

The efficient standard solution, made of reflective metallised PET film and 8 mm bubble film. Keeps the contents below 0 °C for up to about 17 hours and below 8 °C for well over 40 hours. Comparable in insulation to a thin-walled EPS box. Suitable for shipments of 24 to 48 hours, and the most economical choice, widely used in spring, autumn and winter when outside temperatures are less extreme. Available in 25 × 35, 50 × 30, 70 × 40, 70 × 55, 70 × 70 and 110 × 70 cm.

6-layer insulated bag (maximum insulation): 48 to 72 hours

Reflective metallised PET film with bubble film and extra insulation layers for the tougher cold chain. Keeps the contents below 0 °C for well over 30 hours and below 8 °C for up to 48 hours with a single gel pack, and with enough cooling elements it is the choice for shipments of 48 to 72 hours. Comparable in insulation to a thick-walled EPS box, but more flexible to use and more compact to store. For hot summer days, long transit times and strictly controlled shipments such as pharma and international air freight. Available in 25 × 35, 50 × 30, 70 × 40, 70 × 55, 70 × 70 and 110 × 70 cm.

2-layer foam insulated bag: white inside and adhesive strip

The 2-layer bags are made of insulating foam with a reflective outer film. The whole inside is white and all six sizes have a self-adhesive strip. Available in 25 × 35, 30 × 45, 35 × 35, 35 × 55, 67 × 52 and 70 × 70 cm. Use the bag with cooling elements in a suitable shipping box.

How do you use an insulated bag?

The bag works best as an insulating inner layer in a cardboard box, always together with gel packs. A few rules of thumb:

  • Put the products in the insulated bag and the bag in a suitable cardboard box.
  • Place the gel packs on top of the products. Cold air sinks and cools evenly from above.
  • Fill the bag as tightly as you can: the less empty space (and the fuller with chilled or deep-frozen products), the better the cooling performance.
  • Close the 2-layer foam bag with the self-adhesive strip. Seal versions without a strip carefully with tape. The number of gel packs depends on shipping time, contents and outside temperature. If you are unsure, ask for advice or a sample.

Insulated bag or EPS box (styrofoam)?

For many chilled shipments an insulated bag is a smarter alternative to an EPS box. Performance is comparable in practice, but the bag has practical advantages:

  • Takes up far less storage space, supplied flat and compact.
  • Lighter and smaller in volume, which lowers shipping costs.
  • No bulky, crumbly waste stream as with styrofoam; easy to throw away after use.
  • Also available in a version with 95% recycled material for those who want to pack more sustainably.

What are insulated bags and cooling bags used for?

  • Online meals and meal prep. Fresh ingredients and ready meals stay at temperature, even if the recipient does not take the parcel straight away.
  • Meat and fish. Keeps the cold chain intact from sender to recipient. A cooling bag is widely used by butchers and fishmongers with a webshop.
  • Dairy, fruit and vegetables. Dairy, vegetables and fruit travel safely chilled, with an absorbent mat against moisture if needed.
  • Pharma and air freight. With the 6-layer version for validated, tightly controlled cold chain shipments.

Complete your cool box

Combine your insulated bag with a standard cardboard box as outer packaging and with ice packs and gel packs for the cooling. Sending small, flat products by post? Then our cooling envelopes are the compact alternative. Not sure about the right size, number of layers or number of gel packs? Ask for a sample or non-binding advice, and our specialists will look into it with you.

Insulated bags wholesale

We supply insulated bags wholesale: straight from our own production since 1972, in large quantities and from stock. No middleman and no minimum order set by an importer. Ideal as thermal bags or insulated liner bags for frozen and chilled food.

What wholesale means with us

You buy per outer carton or per pallet, with tiered prices that fall as your volume grows. For regular purchasing we agree a fixed price and hold stock for you.

Stock and lead time

Standard sizes are held in stock. Order before 14:00 and it ships the same day. For large quantities or non-standard sizes, a production time of several weeks applies.

Custom sizes and private label

As a manufacturer, we can make non-standard sizes and apply your own print. This makes sense from larger runs; ask about the threshold for your specific size.

Insulated bags for frozen products

Insulated bags for frozen products keep frozen shipments at temperature in transit. With enough coolant, you can achieve a frozen transit of 24 to 48 hours.

Choose six layers

For frozen goods, choose the 6-layer version. The extra layers slow warming considerably compared with 4-layer, and with frozen goods the temperature margin is small.

Send coolant along

An insulated bag does not cool, it slows warming. For frozen goods, freeze the gel ice packs at -18 °C or colder and double the quantity compared with chilled transport.

Condensation

With frozen goods, condensation forms on the outside as soon as the bag leaves the freezer. Pack the bag in a cardboard outer carton so the moisture does not reach the label or the recipient.

When to use a box instead

If the shipment will be in transit for more than 48 hours or is handled a lot, a thick-walled EPS box is the safer choice. The bag wins on price and storage space, the box on cooling time and sturdiness.

Insulated bags for food

Insulated bags for food keep meat, fish, dairy and ready meals at temperature during shipping. The material is suitable for use around food packaging.

Construction

The bag is made of metallised PET with a layer of bubble film. The metallic outside reflects radiant heat, the bubble layer insulates. Available in 4 and 6 layers.

By product group

Meat and fish: 6-layer with ice packs on top. Meal boxes: 4-layer is enough for delivery within 24 hours. Dairy and bakery: 4-layer with an intermediate layer of cardboard so the product does not lie directly against the coolant.

Hygiene

The inside is smooth and absorbs no moisture. Do not use the bag in direct contact with unpackaged food; the product belongs in its own packaging.

Save space

Bags are supplied flat and take up a fraction of the warehouse space of a box. For businesses with limited storage, this is often the deciding argument.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 2-, 4- and 6-layer insulated bags?
The 2-layer bags consist of insulating foam with a reflective outer film. The whole inside is white and all six sizes have a self-adhesive strip. The 4- and 6-layer bags consist of metallised PET film and bubble film, with extra insulation layers in the 6-layer version. The number of insulation layers determines how long the contents stay cold. In our test with a 400 g gel pack at 25 °C, the 4-layer bag keeps the contents below 0 °C for around 17 hours and below 8 °C for well over 40 hours; the 6-layer bag manages well over 30 hours below 0 °C and up to 48 hours below 8 °C. Choose 4-layer for standard shipments and cooler periods, and 6-layer for hot days, longer transit times, pharma and air freight.
How long does an insulated bag stay cold?
It depends on the version, the number of gel packs, the filling and the outside temperature. As a guideline (400 g gel pack, 25 °C): 4-layer up to well over 40 hours below 8 °C, 6-layer up to 48 hours below 8 °C. Packing fuller with less empty space improves performance.
What are the insulated bags made of?
The 2-layer bags consist of insulating foam with a reflective outer film. The whole inside is white and all six sizes have a self-adhesive strip. The 4-layer bags combine reflective metallised PET film with 8 mm bubble film. The 6-layer bags combine metallised PET film with bubble film and extra insulation layers. A version with 95% recycled material is also available.
How do I make the best use of an insulated bag?
Place the products in the bag and the bag in a cardboard box. Put the gel packs on top of the products, because cold air sinks. Fill the bag as tightly as possible. Close the 2-layer foam bag with the self-adhesive strip. Close versions without a strip carefully with tape. The less air remains, the better the cooling.
Is an insulated bag better than an EPS box?
In practice, the insulation performance is comparable: a 4-layer bag is similar to a thin-walled EPS box, while a 6-layer bag is similar to a thick-walled EPS box. The advantage of the bag lies in requiring less storage space, lower volume and weight (lower shipping costs), and less waste. For maximum strength or protection, an EPS box may sometimes remain the better choice.
Are insulated bags suitable for frozen transport?
Yes. In combination with dry ice or sufficient gel packs, they are suitable for frozen transport. For the strictest cold chain requirements and warmer conditions, use the 6-layer variant.
How do I close an insulated bag?
Close the 2-layer foam bag with the self-adhesive strip. Close versions without a strip carefully with tape. It is important that the bag is well filled and tightly closed, so that as little warm air as possible gets in.
What size insulated bag do I need?
Choose a size that fits your product plus the gel packs closely, without much empty space. The 2-layer foam bags with adhesive strip are available in 25 × 35, 30 × 45, 35 × 35, 35 × 55, 67 × 52 and 70 × 70 cm. The 4- and 6-layer bags are available in 25 × 35, 50 × 30, 70 × 40, 70 × 55, 70 × 70 and 110 × 70 cm. Unsure between two sizes or versions? Request a sample and test it with your own product.
Does an insulated bag fit my existing shipping box?
That is exactly what the bag is for: you keep your own box and put the bag inside. Choose the size by the inner dimensions of your box, not the outer dimensions, so the bag lies flat against the wall without creases.
How do I prevent condensation in an insulated bag?
Do not place cooling elements directly against the product and pack the product dry. Condensation forms on the coldest surface; if there is a cardboard layer in between, moisture settles on that instead of on your product.
Why is the opening on the long side for some sizes?
For non-square sizes, the product page states whether the opening is on the short or the long side. Choose the long side if you slide crates or flat cargo into the bag; it saves handling steps when packing.
Is an insulated bag reusable?
Yes, provided it is undamaged. In practice, bags are used once for shipments without return. If the packaging comes back to you, they last several trips.
Do I need coolants with an insulated bag?
Yes. An insulated bag does not cool, it slows warming. Place cooling packs on top of the product, because cold sinks. For frozen goods, double the quantity compared with chilled transport.
Which sizes are available?
We stock standard sizes that match common box formats. As a manufacturer, we also make non-standard sizes on request, including custom printing for larger runs.
Does an insulated bag work without a box around it?
The bag insulates but gives no rigidity. For parcel transport there should always be a box around it: shipped loose, the bag gets damaged in sorting centres and loses its insulating effect.
