Polystyrene box for food: is styrofoam suitable for food?

Polystyrene box for food: is styrofoam suitable for food?

Short answer: whether a polystyrene box is suitable for food depends not on the word "styrofoam" but on the box itself. EPS (expanded polystyrene) has been used for decades for chilled food such as fish, meat and fruit. What matters is a clean, undamaged box, the right temperature and confirmation from your supplier that the box is intended for food contact.

This article answers the questions buyers ask for their first order: what does "suitable for food" mean legally? How do you keep the box hygienic? Can you clean and reuse it? When is it too warm? And which polystyrene box fits which product?

Is styrofoam suitable for food? The legal framework

"Suitable for food" is not a protected material name. It means: a material must not release substances in quantities that endanger health when in contact with food, and must not alter the food or affect its taste. This is stated in Article 3 of Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, the framework for materials in contact with food.

For plastics, Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 also applies. According to Article 15, written declarations of conformity must be available at all trade stages except retail. These contain the data from Annex IV of the regulation.

What does this mean for you as a buyer?

  • Request the declaration of conformity. Ask your supplier for the declaration for the box you want to buy.
  • Read the scope of application. The declaration specifies for which types of food and under which conditions (for example temperature and contact time) it applies.
  • Check the connection. The declaration must relate to the supplied product and must name the manufacturer or importer.

Whether a particular package falls under these rules and what the declaration covers should be discussed with your supplier and possibly with the food authority. This is guidance and not legal advice.

Hygiene: how to keep the box clean

EPS absorbs almost no water and maintains its shape. This makes wet products like fish easier to handle. Hygiene, however, mainly depends on your packing process:

  • Do not place products loosely in the box. Also pack fish, meat and wet products tightly in film, vacuum bag or inner bag.
  • Fill only clean, dry boxes. Store boxes dust-free and do not pack in a humid environment.
  • Sort out damaged boxes. Tears, broken corners and waterlogged spots are hard to keep clean.
  • Keep cooling elements separate. Do not place cooling elements or gel packs directly on unpacked products.
  • Close the lid. A fitting lid protects against dirt and keeps the cold in the box.

Cleaning and reusing the polystyrene box

Can you clean a polystyrene box after use? With light contamination, yes. When reuse makes sense, see here:

Situation Recommendation
Box had only contact with packaged, dry goods Wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent, let dry thoroughly, reuse
Visible dirt or odour Do not reuse for food
Contact with raw meat or fish, liquid in box In case of doubt take a new box, or use it only for non-food
Tears, dents, porous spots Sort out and dispose of styrofoam correctly
Very frequent use on fixed routes Consider EPP boxes for reuse

Do not use high pressure, hot water or solvents. These can damage the surface. Let the box dry completely before putting the lid on. If you reuse the box for food, you are responsible for hygiene. Record reuse in commercial use in your hygiene plan.

Warm or cold: what is the box intended for?

A polystyrene box is intended for chilled and frozen transport. It insulates but does not produce cold. For hot dishes it is not the right choice.

As a guideline, the German consumer portal lebensmittel-forum.de mentions a continuous operating temperature of minus 10 to plus 70 °C. The German Krebsinformationsdienst advised in a November 2024 post not to use polystyrene dishes for hot or fatty dishes. Microwave ovens are in principle unsuitable for polystyrene.

Application Suitable? Note
Chilled products (refrigerator temperature) Yes Pre-cooling, include cooling elements
Freezer Yes Thick-walled box, frozen cooling elements. Dry ice only according to carrier rules
Warm products up to approximately 70 °C With caution Check manufacturer data and declaration of conformity
Hot or very fatty dishes No Use suitable dishes for these
Microwave oven, oven No Styrofoam is not designed for this

Which polystyrene box for which product?

The choice depends on product, transit time and moisture. The table provides an overview. Wall thicknesses are guidelines from our range: thin wall approximately 15 to 20 mm, thick wall approximately 30 to 50 mm.

Product Suitable box Note
Fish and seafood Box with drainage holes for products on ice, otherwise without Meltwater, absorbent mat, tight inner packaging
Fresh meat Box without drainage holes for vacuum packaged meat Frozen cooling elements, vacuum packaging
Vegetables and fruit Usually thin wall up to approximately 24 hours Pre-cooling, not too much residual air
Cheese, sausage, ready-to-eat Thin or thick wall, depending on chilling time Cold chain until delivery
Frozen, ice cream Thick wall Frozen cooling elements, sufficient coolant

Polystyrene box for fish

Fish releases meltwater. For products on ice, a box with drainage holes is therefore advisable. Place an absorbent mat on the bottom and pack the fish tightly. The details are in chilled fish shipment.

Polystyrene box for meat

With meat, temperature and tight packaging count. Vacuum pack and place frozen cooling elements on top. What you need to arrange with meat is in chilled fresh meat shipment.

Polystyrene box for fruit

Vegetables and fruit usually only need refrigerator temperature. Pre-cool the products and choose the smallest box that fits everything. Whether fruit needs air depends on the type. Arrange this in advance with your customer or quality department.

Condensation and drainage holes

Condensation occurs when warm, humid air meets cold surfaces such as cooling elements. Meltwater comes from ice, fish or thawed products. Both accumulate at the bottom of the box.

  • Box without drainage holes: retains liquid. This suits vacuum and well-packaged products and when nothing must leak.
  • Box with drainage holes: water runs out. This suits fish on ice. The box is then not watertight, place it on a tray or mat.
  • Absorbent mat: binds residual moisture in both variants.
  • Frozen cooling elements instead of loose ice: produces less meltwater.

All variants are available at EPS with drainage holes and EPS without drainage holes.

Styrofoam ban: what applies to shipping boxes?

Since 3 July 2021, single-use food packaging made from expanded polystyrene has been banned in the EU when food is consumed directly, such as in takeaway meals. According to IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen (press release from November 2020), the European Commission has clarified in its guidelines that, for example, boxes for fresh fish and meat are not covered by this ban. If you have doubts about your application, ask your supervisor.

Frequently asked questions about the polystyrene box for food

Is a polystyrene box suitable for food?

For chilled and frozen products, EPS is widely used. Whether a particular box is intended for food contact is evident from the declaration of conformity. Ask your supplier for it.

Can I use hot dishes or a microwave oven?

No. Polystyrene boxes are intended for chilled and frozen products. Use suitable dishes for hot or fatty dishes and microwave ovens.

Can I use a polystyrene box for fish and meat?

Yes, if you also pack the products tightly and account for enough frozen cooling elements. For fish on ice, a box with drainage holes is often the better choice.

How do I clean a polystyrene box?

Wipe it with a damp cloth and mild detergent and let it dry completely. Avoid high pressure, hot water and solvents.

How often can I reuse a polystyrene box?

As long as it is clean, dry and undamaged. After contact with raw meat or fish, in case of doubt take a new box.

What helps against condensation in the polystyrene box?

Pack the products tightly, place an absorbent mat on the bottom and use frozen cooling elements. For products on ice, a box with drainage holes helps. How long the box stays cold is explained in how long does a polystyrene box stay cold?
