Thermal pallet covers — also known as insulated pallet covers, thermal covers, air cargo covers, ULD covers, reflective pallet covers or cargo blankets — protect temperature-sensitive cargo in air freight. What each term means exactly is explained at air cargo covers. Around 95% of our covers go onto ULD and pallet shipments on KLM, Lufthansa and Emirates routes. Typical cargo is perishables: fruit and vegetables, flowers and plants, fish and seafood, meat and pharma shipments — cargo that otherwise takes temperature spikes between cold store, apron and cargo hold. The reflective outer layer blocks radiant heat, the insulating inner layer keeps the cold in the load. Please note: this is not a plastic pallet cover against rain or dust — a thermal cover insulates against temperature. Reusable instead of single-use shrink film. Available in standard sizes for Euro pallets, block pallets and roll containers, and for the common ULD formats PMC, PAG, AKE and LD3, with custom production for non-standard builds. Thermal covers, also known as thermalcovers, thermal covers or thermal blankets, are flexible insulation covers that protect goods against temperature fluctuations and moisture during transport and storage.

Our thermal covers form a passive thermal barrier and are widely used for the chilled shipping of products on pallets and ULDs (Unit Load Devices). They help protect temperature-sensitive goods against external influences during transport and handling.

How do thermal covers work?

Thermal covers work as a passive insulation layer around a pallet, ULD or load. They do not cool actively, but slow down temperature changes from external influences such as heat, cold and air flows.

External influences — Temperature, sun, wind and moisture affect your load during transport and storage.

Insulating effect — The thermal cover limits heat transfer and protects against rapid temperature changes.

More stable temperature — Products stay within a safe temperature for longer during logistics processes.

What determines the performance of a thermal cover?

  • Starting temperature of the load
  • Duration of transport and transhipment
  • Outside temperature and conditions
  • Use of gel packs or ice packs
  • How well the cover fits around the pallet or ULD

Standard thermal covers and custom work

Most thermal covers are used in standard sizes for pallets and air freight, such as EURO pallet (120×80 cm) and US pallet (120×100 cm). These are ready to use and fit perfectly with common logistics processes.

For air freight we also supply thermal covers for ULDs such as LD3, LD6 and PMC units. These thermalcovers protect your load against temperature fluctuations during transport and handling.

Do you have a different application? Then thermal covers can also be tailored to specific dimensions, such as roll containers or special loads. Thanks to our own production, we deliver quickly and flexibly, both for standard solutions and custom work within the cold chain.

Applications of thermal covers

Air freight (ULD, LD3 and pallets)

Thermal covers are indispensable within air cargo. During loading and unloading on the apron, large temperature differences often arise. Thermalcovers protect pallets, LD3 containers and ULDs against heat, cold and moisture. This prevents damage to pharmaceutical products, food and electronics and ensures a more stable temperature throughout the entire transport process.

Road transport and last-mile distribution

When no refrigerated lorry is available, thermal covers offer a practical solution. They help keep products at temperature longer in standard transport vehicles. When do you use thermal covers?

What is the difference between a thermal pallet cover and a plain pallet cover?
They are not the same product. A plain pallet cover is a plastic hood that protects the pallet against rain, dust and dirt. A thermal pallet cover is an insulating cover that keeps the cargo at temperature: the reflective outer layer blocks radiant heat and the insulating inner layer keeps the cold in. If you need weather protection, you need a plastic hood. If it is about temperature, you are in the right place. We supply thermal covers in standard sizes for Euro pallets (120x80 cm), block pallets (120x100 cm) and the ULD formats PMC, PAG, AKE and LD3, plus made-to-measure from our own production.
Are thermal pallet covers suitable for air freight?

How do you fit a thermal cover over a pallet or ULD?
The cover is pulled over the finished build-up from the top, like a bell, and closed at the foot of the pallet. Two people manage it in a few minutes, without tools. What matters is that the cover fits as snugly as possible: the less air circulates, the slower the cargo warms up.
Waarom een thermohoes en geen krimpfolie?
Krimpfolie houdt een pallet bij elkaar maar isoleert niet en reflecteert geen warmte. Voor lading die op temperatuur moet blijven voegt folie dus niets toe. Een thermohoes dekt af en houdt de koude vast, en is herbruikbaar.
Hoe lang houdt een thermohoes de lading op temperatuur?
Een thermohoes koelt niet, hij vertraagt opwarming. Hoe lang dat duurt hangt af van de begintemperatuur van de lading, de buitentemperatuur en of de pallet in de zon of in de schaduw staat. In de luchtvracht gaat het meestal om de uren tussen koelhuis en vrachtruim, en juist die uren zijn kritisch.
Is een thermohoes herbruikbaar?
Ja, een thermohoes gaat vele trajecten mee. Komt de verpakking bij u terug, dan is herbruikbaar vrijwel altijd goedkoper dan wegwerpfolie. Stuurt de ontvanger de hoes niet terug, dan vervalt dat voordeel.
Welke maten zijn er voor pallets?

Which ULD formats does a thermal cover fit?
We supply covers for the common ULD formats PMC, PAG, AKE and LD3, as well as for Euro pallets (120 x 80 cm), block pallets (120 x 100 cm) and roll containers. As a ULD cover or cargo blanket they go straight onto the standard build-ups used by KLM, Lufthansa and Emirates.
Heb ik naast een thermohoes nog koelelementen nodig?
Dat hangt af van uw traject. Een thermohoes remt de opwarming van buitenaf, maar voegt zelf geen koude toe. Bij langere trajecten of warme omstandigheden combineert u de hoes met koelmiddelen in de lading zelf.
