Other names for freezer packs

A freezer pack is also called a cooling element, cooling block or freezer element. In everyday use they are also known as cold packs. This is the hard version, which you can freeze repeatedly and use again. Looking for the soft version? See the gel ice packs, gel packs and cool packs.

Buy cooling elements: choose the right size

Cooling elements, also called freezer elements, gel cooling elements or hard cool packs, are important for chilled shipping or temporary cooling of products such as food, medicines or temperature-sensitive goods. At Cooled Solutions you can choose from 200g, 400g and 750g cooling elements, suited to different uses and shipping periods. All are ready to ship from stock, reusable and leak proof.

Comparing cooling elements: weight and use

200 gram: for small parcels

Suited to small parcels and short transport. Suitable for e-commerce shipments of pharma products, small meal boxes or fish fillets.

400 gram: the standard

Standard shipments and medium-size packaging. Our best-selling size, suitable for regular food and pharma shipments with a standardised cooling time.

750 gram: large cooling elements for large shipments

Larger packaging and longer transit times. These large cooling elements are suited to pallet-level cooling, frozen transport and shipments lasting several days.

How do you use cooling elements?

Freeze the cooling elements completely in the freezer beforehand, so they can hold as much cold as possible. After freezing, place them together with the product in the insulating packaging, for example a thermal bag as an inner lining in the box, or a cool box. The combination of good insulation and enough cooling capacity decides how long your products stay at the right temperature.

Cooling elements are especially suited to passive temperature control, when active cooling (such as electric refrigeration units) is not an option. With the right cooling elements and EPS insulation you keep safe temperature zones during transport and storage.

Advantages over gel packs

Professional use: In professional settings, hard cooling elements are used more often than gel packs. Businesses choose them because they perform more reliably and consistently in regular transport. Where gel packs are mainly handy for single use, cooling elements prove themselves in daily logistics.

Sturdy construction: A hard plastic shell instead of a flexible film pouch. The risk of tearing or leaking is practically nil, even with rough transport or repeated drops. Suited to situations where parcels are moved or stacked a lot.

Durability and reuse: Thanks to their sturdy build, cooling elements last much longer than gel packs. You can reuse them hundreds of times without loss of quality. This saves money in the long run and creates less waste.

Long-lasting cooling performance: Depending on the use and the insulation, cooling elements can give constant cooling for between 24 and 72 hours. This long cooling capacity is very valuable for multi-day transport or international shipments.

Why buy cooling elements from Cooled Solutions?

Our own production: Our cooling elements are made in our own factory. 100% leak proof, food safe and suitable for pharmaceutical use. Sustainable, high quality, from our own production.

Straight from stock: Order before 14:00 and we ship your cooling elements the same working day. You often have them within 1 to 2 working days, including large quantities.

Custom sizes possible: As the manufacturer, we can supply cooling elements in specific dimensions or with different properties if you wish. Get in touch at info@cooledsolutions.com.

Guides & advice: Freezer packs

Frequently asked questions

What are cooling elements?
Cooling elements (also known as freezer packs or rigid ice packs) are hard plastic elements filled with a cooling liquid or gel. You place them in the freezer in advance, after which they act as a passive cooling source to keep products chilled temporarily during transport or storage.
What is inside a cooling element?
A cooling element is filled with water plus a superabsorbent gel or salt mixture (often based on cellulose or a sodium compound). The gel keeps the element cold for longer than plain frozen water and stops it running out if the casing is damaged. Our cooling elements are non-toxic and food safe.
How do you use cooling elements?
First place the cooling elements in the freezer until fully frozen. Then position them with the product in insulating packaging such as an EPS box or insulated bag for a stable temperature. Preferably place them on top of the product, as cold air sinks.
How many cooling elements do I need in a cool box?
As a rule of thumb, use at least two 400 g cooling elements for a standard cool box or EPS box. For longer transport times, hot days or a larger box, use more or choose heavier (750 g) elements. The fuller and tighter you pack, the better the result.
How long do cooling elements stay cold?
Cooling time depends on the weight of the cooling element, the amount of insulation and the ambient temperature. Heavier cooling elements combined with good insulation stay cold for 24-72 hours.
Are cooling elements reusable?
Yes, cooling elements are designed for repeated use. They can be frozen hundreds of times without any noticeable loss of cooling performance.
What is the difference between cooling elements and gel packs?
Cooling elements have a hard casing and are very dimensionally stable and leak-proof. Gel packs are more flexible and fit more easily around products. For structural, intensive use, cooling elements are often the most durable choice.
What size do I need?
200 g for small parcels and short transports. 400 g for standard shipments (most popular). 750 g (large cooling elements) for larger packaging and longer transit times.
What is the delivery time?
Order before 14:00 = shipped today from our own factory. For large volumes, we recommend contacting us for competitive volume pricing.
May I place cooling elements against the product?
Not directly for frost-sensitive products: put a layer of cardboard or film in between. Cold sinks, so preferably place the elements on top of the cargo rather than underneath.
What is the fastest way to freeze cooling elements?
Lay them loose side by side in the freezer, not stacked. Stacked, full freezing takes much longer, and an element that is not yet frozen inside releases far less cold en route than you think.
What do I do with a leaking cooling element?
Dispose of it with general waste. The contents are not toxic, but a leaking element fills with air and no longer insulates reliably. If it was already leaking on delivery, report it to us with a photo.
How do I freeze cooling elements properly?
Lay them loose and flat in the freezer at minus 18 degrees or colder, not stacked. Stacked elements do not freeze through in the core and then deliver only a fraction of their cooling capacity.
What weight do I need?
Smaller elements for small boxes and short routes, heavier elements for larger boxes, long transit times or frozen shipments. More cooling mass means a longer cooling time, but also more weight in your shipment.
Are cooling elements safe with food?
The filling is non-toxic and the hard casing stays closed, so no moisture reaches your product. The contents are not meant to be eaten. Keep elements out of reach of children and replace damaged ones.
What is a eutectic plate?
A eutectic plate is a hard cooling plate filled with a salt solution with a fixed melting point, for example -18 °C or 0 °C. Because of that fixed melting point, the plate releases its cold more slowly and at a more constant temperature than a gel pack. They are mainly used in fish, catering and courier transport and can be reused hundreds of times.
What is an ice pack?
An ice pack or gel pack is a flexible bag filled with cooling gel that you freeze and place in the packaging as a cold source. A cooling element does the same with a hard plastic casing. Ice packs of 200 to 1000 grams keep a shipment cold for 24 to 72 hours, depending on the insulation.
