Buy cooler boxes: the right insulation for every shipment

A cooler box keeps your product at temperature in transit. Which one fits best depends on how long your shipment is on the road, how much you send, how much sustainability matters and whether you want to pack reusable or single-use. Cooled Solutions makes and supplies the full range, from classic styrofoam to recyclable cardboard and reusable EPP. Below you will find what each type does best.

Which cooler box suits your shipment?

EPS boxes (styrofoam): maximum insulation and protection

The EPS box is the classic cooler box: high insulation value, sturdy and shock resistant. Suitable for meat, fish, pharma and anything where protection and insulation both count. Choose a thin wall for short trips or a thick wall for 24 to 48 hours.

Cardboard cooler boxes: a 100% recyclable alternative

Our cardboard cooler boxes (Eco Coolbox, honeycomb and insulated boxes with TempGuard) give insulation comparable to EPS, but simply go in with the waste paper after use. The sustainable choice for brands that want to pack plastic free.

Thermal boxes: foldable and pallet efficient

The thermal box combines a cardboard outer box with a 4-layer or 6-layer insulated bag. Because the box is supplied flat, up to 5× as many fit on a pallet, a big saving in storage and transport. Suited to fresh e-commerce and meal boxes.

EPP boxes: strong and reusable hundreds of times

The EPP box is stronger and more resilient than EPS and lasts hundreds of return trips. The right choice for closed-loop systems such as healthcare logistics and lab transport.

Mobile cool boxes: for the road and on site

If you want a portable solution, look at our cool boxes of 12 to 32 litres, with or without a 12V connection, reusable and suited to transport, events and mobile healthcare.

How does a cooler box work in practice?

The insulation comes from the material and from the way you pack. The thicker the wall or the more insulation layers, the longer the contents stay at temperature. Just as important is the filling: empty space is your enemy. Pack as tightly as you can and place the cooling elements on top of the product, because cold air sinks and cools evenly from above. Cooling time also depends on the outside temperature, the transit time and the number of cooling elements.

What are cooler boxes used for?

  • Meat, fish and dairy. Chilled and frozen transport, often with absorbent mats against meltwater.
  • Meal boxes and fresh e-commerce. Light, affordable packaging for next-day delivery of fresh products.
  • Pharma and medical. Cold chain transport in the 2 to 8 °C range, with cooling elements or PCM packs.
  • Frozen. With dry ice, the contents stay frozen for well over 48 hours.

Which cooler box is best?

There is no single best choice. It depends on your priority. For maximum insulation and protection, choose thick-wall EPS. For sustainability, cardboard or honeycomb. For reuse, EPP. For storage and transport savings, the foldable thermal box. And for small, flat shipments, a cooling envelope is often enough instead of a box. Sending complete pallets instead of loose boxes? Which insulated shipping box do I need?
That depends on your priority. Maximum insulation and protection: thick-walled EPS. Sustainability: cardboard cool box or honeycomb. Reuse (closed loop): EPP. Storage and transport savings: foldable thermal box. Portable use on the go: a mobile cool box. If you are unsure between two options, request a sample.
How long does a cooling box stay cold?
In practice, roughly 12 to 48 hours, depending on the type, wall thickness or number of insulation layers, the number of gel packs and the outside temperature. A thin-walled EPS box achieves around 8 to 12 hours, a thick-walled one with gel packs 24 to 48 hours, and with dry ice the contents remain frozen for well over 48 hours.
What is the difference between EPS, cardboard and a foldable thermal box?
EPS (expanded polystyrene) provides maximum insulation and the strongest protection. Cardboard cool boxes insulate comparably but are 100% recyclable. The foldable thermal box is a cardboard box with a separate insulated bag that is delivered flat, so you save significantly on storage and transport. The choice is mainly about protection versus sustainability versus storage efficiency.
Do I need to order gel packs separately?
Yes, for most cool boxes you order cooling elements or gel packs separately. A cool box insulates, but does not cool by itself. Place the cooling elements on top of the product for even cooling. Our mobile cool boxes are supplied with 2 cooling elements as standard.
Do you supply custom-made insulated boxes?
Yes. With our own production since 1972 and an extensive range of moulds, we can often find a size close to your requirements, even outside the standard range. We usually produce fully custom solutions within 2 to 6 weeks. Request a quote for your specific situation.
