Insulated pallet cover for food transport
An insulated pallet cover for food transport is an insulating cover that you place over a pallet or roll container, so chilled food suffers less from temperature swings on the way. At Cooled Solutions this product is called an insulated pallet cover. In air freight you will also hear thermal cover or cargo cover. Below you will find which foods qualify, which size fits your load and where the cover has its limits.
What does a thermal blanket do to keep things cold?
A thermal blanket to keep things cold is a cover that keeps the outside temperature out. The cover protects against heat, cold and moisture. As a result the temperature around your load swings less during transport and storage. A more stable environment means the product arrives in better quality.
An insulated pallet cover does not actively cool: it slows down temperature change. For extra cooling you combine the cover with ice packs or cooling elements. What the cover achieves depends on the starting temperature of the load, the duration of transport and handling, the outside temperature and the use of cooling elements in the load.
Insulated pallet cover for food: which products are suitable?
You use an insulated pallet cover for food on perishable goods that travel on pallets or in roll containers. These examples come from our product data:
- dairy, fruit and vegetables on pallets;
- meat and vegetables in roll containers for distribution;
- small batches of fresh produce on compact pallets;
- liquids such as syrups and oils in IBC containers;
- chilled goods for supermarket deliveries.
The cover is reusable and made of sturdy materials. It also protects against rain, humidity and condensation.
Which size fits your pallet or container?
The table below shows which version goes with which load.
| Load | Cover size | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Euro pallet | 120 x 80 x 150 cm | Perishable goods |
| Block pallet | 120 x 100 x 150 cm | Vegetables, fruit, dairy |
| Large block pallet | 120 x 120 x 150 cm | Large loads |
| Small pallet | 80 x 60 x 150 cm | Fruit or meat in small batches |
| Roll container | 85 x 70 x 155 cm with fold-up door | Distribution with multiple stops |
| Roll container | 85 x 70 x 150 cm without opening | Shipment that is only opened at the destination |
| IBC container | 120 x 100 x 120 cm | Syrups, oils |
| Drum | 60 x 60 x 90 cm | Food production |
For block pallets and euro pallets there is also a double-layer version. The size stays the same. See the insulated pallet covers for all versions.
Roll container with fold-up door for distribution
The roll container cover with fold-up door is intended for distribution trips with multiple stops. You fold the door open at the front, take what you need and close it again, without removing the whole cover. This way less cold is lost and loading and unloading go faster.
The version without an opening fits when the container is only opened at the final destination. There is then no seam where cold can escape. Both versions are reusable. Whether an insulated pallet cover or refrigerated truck suits your situation is explained in the blog.
Do not forget the base of the pallet
People often forget that warm air rises. That is why there is an insulated base to complement the cover. Our pallet bases are made of bubble film laminated with aluminum. They protect against outside temperatures, reduce damage from rain and are easy to put on. There is a base for euro pallets (110 x 150 cm) and for block pallets (130 x 150 cm), also in a double-layer version of 8 mm thick. Many customers buy base and cover together.
The same cover for medicines: pharma pallet cover
The pharma pallet cover is not a different product, but the same cover in a different application. What the cover does for medicines and what it does not do is explained in our article on the insulated pallet cover for medicines and pharma transport.
